WATER: The Student Page Here are important sentences to analyze. Look at the vocabulary words

This is the page that students need to see.  This is the key information about the "Water Lab."
This exercise was tested with Rod McQueen.

Read these sentences with your partner.
Rod McQueen filtered the
tap water and tested the
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

WHAT DO YOU ALREADY KNOW ABOUT CITY WATER?
(1) The manager of the Coral Springs water department buys bottled water.
What does this mean?

(2) The city of Flint, Michigan had a problem with it's water system.  Look up "flint Michigan water problem"

(Read these sentences from the Amazon.com location)

SENTENCE 1: CHEMICALS
Even if you live in a municipality that cleans or treats water, water can pick up chemicals on its way from the treatment plant to your faucet, giving your tap water a metallic or chlorinated taste.

SENTENCE 2: CHLORINE
ZeroWater's first layer of filtration removes the chlorine taste you are accustom to with tap water.

SENTENCE 3: LEAD
The Ion Exchange stage removes virtually all dissolved solids that may be left over from public water systems or even leached into your water from piping such as Aluminum, Lead, Zinc, Nitrate and more.

SENTENCE 4: IMPURITIES
Three additional stages are included to remove other impurities and to ensure your water receives the appropriate amount of treatment time to deliver a '000' reading on your TDS meter (included).

SENTENCE 5:  DISSOLVED SOLIDS
TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids and represents the amount of dissolved substances that can negatively affect the way water tastes.

What is the cost per gallon of water?

SHOW YOUR WORK (work with your partner)

LABORATORY
What is the Total Dissolved Solids of unfiltered city water?

What is the Total Dissolved Solids of unfiltered bottled water?

What is the Total Dissolved Solids of filtered city water?

How can you test and get numbers for these three types of water?

The catalog description of the product has these two sentences
BENEFITS:
• NSF Certified to REDUCE LEAD
• Removes 99.6% of all dissolved solids

What is "NSF"?
How can we find out what "NSF" means?

If there are 100 parts and 99.6% are removed, how many parts remain?
If there are 1000 parts and 99.6% are removed, how many parts remain?
If there are 1,000,000 dissolved solids, and 99.6% are removed, how many parts remain?

Here are photos from the video.
