WATER: The Student Page Here are important sentences to analyze. Look at the vocabulary words

This is the page that students need to see.  This is the key information about the "Water Lab."
This exercise was tested with Rod McQueen.

Read these sentences with your partner.
Rod McQueen filtered the
tap water and tested the
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

WHAT DO YOU ALREADY KNOW ABOUT CITY WATER?
(1) The manager of the Coral Springs water department buys bottled water.
What does this mean?

(2) The city of Flint, Michigan had a problem with it's water system.  Look up "flint Michigan water problem"
What was the problem with the water?

(3) What are the features of the Zero Water Filter?
(Read these sentences from the Amazon.com location)

SENTENCE 1: CHEMICALS
Even if you live in a municipality that cleans or treats water, water can pick up chemicals on its way from the treatment plant to your faucet, giving your tap water a metallic or chlorinated taste.

SENTENCE 2: CHLORINE
ZeroWater's first layer of filtration removes the chlorine taste you are accustom to with tap water.

SENTENCE 3: LEAD
The Ion Exchange stage removes virtually all dissolved solids that may be left over from public water systems or even leached into your water from piping such as Aluminum, Lead, Zinc, Nitrate and more.

SENTENCE 4: IMPURITIES
Three additional stages are included to remove other impurities and to ensure your water receives the appropriate amount of treatment time to deliver a '000' reading on your TDS meter (included).

SENTENCE 5:  DISSOLVED SOLIDS
TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids and represents the amount of dissolved substances that can negatively affect the way water tastes.

MATH EXERCISE

How much does a filter cost?  $30 for 2 filters

How many gallons of water will one filter clean?   30 gallons

What is the cost per gallon of water?

SHOW YOUR WORK (work with your partner)

LABORATORY
What is the Total Dissolved Solids of unfiltered city water?

What is the Total Dissolved Solids of unfiltered bottled water?

What is the Total Dissolved Solids of filtered city water?

How can you test and get numbers for these three types of water?

The catalog description of the product has these two sentences
BENEFITS:
• NSF Certified to REDUCE LEAD
• Removes 99.6% of all dissolved solids

What is "NSF"?
How can we find out what "NSF" means?

If there are 100 parts and 99.6% are removed, how many parts remain?
If there are 1000 parts and 99.6% are removed, how many parts remain?
If there are 1,000,000 dissolved solids, and 99.6% are removed, how many parts remain?

Here are photos from the video.

Feb. 25: Tests Show High Lead Levels In Home

A city test "reveals high lead content in the water of a Flint resident's home." As Michigan Radio reported, the water at Lee Anne Walters' home "turns up with a lead content of 104 parts per billion. Fifteen parts per billion is the [Environmental Protection Agency]'s limit for lead in drinking water."
In April, Walters says her child was diagnosed with lead poisoning. An independent test done by Virginia Tech researchers finds lead levels at 13,200 ppb — water is considered hazardous waste at 5,000 ppb.
  • If you are on a school board and wish to have your school’s water tested for lead, ZeroWater would like to make that happen. Please contact EnviroTek Labs for free testing for schools: jyoung@enviroteklab.com 856-478-0010

ZeroWater 23-Cup Water Dispenser and Filtration System

With its generous 23-cup capacity, this innovative water-filtration system keeps pure, filtered drinking water conveniently accessible--its sleek, space-saving design fits neatly on the counter or on a shelf in the refrigerator. Functioning as both a water filter and a handy dispenser, the unit comes equipped with a push-button spout for simple one-handed dispensing into a glass, water bottle, or other beverage container, or even into a pot for cooking. Sleek, slim design.
Unlike conventional two-stage carbon filters, the dispenser's next-generation filtration system combines five levels of water-purifying technology. First, its activated carbon and oxidation reduction alloy removes the chlorine taste typically associated with tap water. Next, its Ion Exchange stage removes virtually all dissolved solids that may be left over from public water systems or even leached into water from aluminum, lead, and other types of piping. Finally, three additional stages of filtration remove other impurities and ensure the water receives the appropriate amount of treatment time to deliver a '000' reading on the included laboratory-grade Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) water-testing meter. Thoughtfully designed, the water dispenser also provides a built-in TDS meter holder, a flip-up lid for easily adding more water, and a shape that completely dispenses all the water inside, which means no stale water to worry about. A useful addition to any busy and health-conscious household, the 23-cup water-filtration dispenser measures approximately 6-inches by 11-1/5-inches by 15-1/5-inches and carries a 90-day limited warranty.

Five-Stage Filtration System:
Unlike conventional gravity-fed or carbon water filters that remove only certain substances from your water, ZeroWater's patented 5-stage Ion Exchange System delivers the only filtered water to measure 000 PPM (parts per million) on the TDS meter. Compare that to the levels you’ll find in other filtered waters, most bottled waters and plain unfiltered tap water, all of which contain measureable amounts of dissolved solids. TDS meter readings for tap water in the US average between 190 and 200 PPM. Conventional filtered water measures between 030-500 PPM, and bottled water between 000-350 PPM.
Stage 1: Activated carbon infused micro cloth.
Stage 2: Multi-layer system using carbon and oxidation reduces alloy.
Stage 3: Distributor that maximizes contact time.
Stage 4: Comprehensive ION Exchange array.
Stage 5: Non-woven membrane to remove fine particles.
The included TDS meter ensures that you're getting the best-tasting water possible.
Battery-Powered TDS Meter Makes it Easy to Test Your Water:
The beauty of the ZeroWater Pitcher is that you don't have to accept purity claims at face value. Test your water yourself with the included meter and watch as the zeros come together to ensure that you're getting the best-tasting water possible. Powered by two easy-to-replace 1.5-volt button cell batteries (included), this meter also lets you know the status of your filter. For instance, if your meter reads '006', it's time to replace the filter.

Our school has applied for the Science News

LINK         SEE SOME BACK ISSUES of the magazine

Society for Science & the Public's Science News in High Schools program brings Science News magazine to high schools across the U.S. and worldwide. The program offers teachers and students access to the latest in-depth reporting on science topics — transforming how students and educators interact with science in the classroom by providing them with real-world examples, information, and inspiration.
The Science News in High Schools program launched in September 2015, as part of a larger commitment to create a more scientifically literate society. Science News, published since 1922, provides an approachable overview from all fields and applications of STEM. The magazine is written by a staff of experienced science journalists, many with Ph.D.s in scientific disciplines.
With generous new funding from Regeneron, the Society is able to offer Science News in High Schools to 4,000 additional public high schools and public charter schools for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Participating high schools receive:
  • 10 print copies of each issue of Science News magazine published during the academic year
  • Digital access to sciencenews.org — including the full archive — for the entire school, including teachers
  • An online Educator Guide with discussion questions for each issue, to help teachers incorporate the content into their lesson plans and curriculum
  • Access to an online community for sharing ideas and best practices for using Science News in High Schools

The membrane between the egg shell and the egg white

Eggs -- The empty egg...

Make the egg empty by making a small hole on each end of the egg and then blow out the white and the yolk.

Then soak the shell in vinegar.  The shell will dissolve in the acid and you are left with the membrane.

These photos come from Steve Spangler's page.

You can see more HERE

You can see in minute 2:37 that the membrane can collapse.   The website recommends baby powder to keep the membrane dry.
